Bullying in School

Image
By Elisabeth Filmona Angeline Situmeang (1209624111) Bullying continues to be one of the most harmful and widespread problems in educational  environments, affecting millions of students around the world every year. It takes many forms;  verbal, physical, social, and increasingly, cyberbullying, and can leave long-lasting scars on its  victims. Children who are bullied often experience anxiety, depression, low self-esteem, and a  decline in academic performance. The school, which should be a place of safety and growth,  becomes a source of stress and fear. The issue is further exacerbated by the silence that  surrounds it. Many students are too afraid or ashamed to report bullying, while some teachers  and school administrators may not take complaints seriously or may fail to act due to unclear  protocols. In some cultures, bullying is dismissed as normal “kids’ behavior” or simply a part  of growing up, which only serves to protect the perpe...

Online Learning Challenges

Image
By Elisabeth Filmona Angeline Situmeang (1209624111) In the wake of rapid technological advancement and the necessity for remote education during  global crises such as the COVID-19 pandemic, online learning has become a common method  of instruction. However, while it offers flexibility and accessibility, it also presents serious  challenges for many students. One major issue is the lack of engagement and motivation that  often accompanies remote learning environments. Students are easily distracted by their  surroundings at home, and without the presence of a teacher or peers in the same physical  space, they may find it difficult to stay focused and committed. Moreover, online platforms  can feel impersonal, leading to a sense of isolation and disconnection from the learning process.  Many students miss the social interaction, encouragement, and immediate feedback that  traditional classrooms provide elements essential for emotional and ac...

A Crowded Book Festival I Attended

Image
By Mutiara Nurul Fathya (1209624108) Last four months, I decided to visit the book festival held by Gramedia called Semesta Buku.  It was held in several locations across Indonesia, one of them was in Gramedia Palmerah  Jakarta, where I went. This book festival is known for the affordable book sales. As I entered  the building, rows of tables were filled with discounted books, arranged by genre, such as  fiction, self-improvement, comics, and cookbooks. All I could see was a sea of people hunting  for books, reading synopses, and trying to choose between one title and another. The familiar  scent of fresh books, like a mix of crisp paper, newly printed ink, and just a hint of glue,  welcomed me, and that somehow made everything feel exciting. There were readers from all  backgrounds, like students sitting on the floor reading, parents browsing through children’s  books, and friends chatting while comparing titles. In the corner of the store, ...

A Meaningful Gift I Received

Image
By Mutiara Nurul Fathya (1209624108) On one corner of my study desk sits a medium-sized, plain-colored notebook, a gift I received  on my birthday two years ago from my middle-school best friend, Yaya. The notebook’s  transparent, rigid front cover, made of a clear plastic, protects the following soft, grey inner  cover. The design of the inner cover has a subtle coffee shop theme printed all over it, such as  little teapots, cupcakes, croissants, and mugs of steaming coffee. In the center of it, there is a  simple white label that says “Gutteridge Coffee House” and “Coffee House, since 1691,” which  makes it have even more classic, vintage vibes. Inside, the first thing that catches my attention  is the brownish-yellow-colored paper; it’s not the standard white but a soft, earthy tone. The  pages are lined neatly, with a faint dotted line near the bottom and a clean margin at the top.  The back cover is made from brown, wood-like material. I...

Rise and Shine or Stay Up Late?

Image
By Sakhasila Bintang Sutresno (1209624114) While some people thrive by waking up early, others find their energy peaks late at night. Morning people, often called “early birds,” tend to start their day with focus and productivity, making them easier to function at workplaces that operate during the day like school or traditional office jobs. They usually feel more alert in the early hours and often go to bed earlier. On the other hand, night owls are more active and creative during the evening or late at night, often struggling with early alarms but excelling in flexible or independent work environments. While early birds may benefit from better sleep patterns and alignment with daytime responsibilities, night owls often enjoy quiet hours and fewer distractions at night. Despite their differences, both types can be productive in their own ways. What matters most is understanding and working with your natural rhythm.

Air Conditioner VS Fan

Image
By Sakhasila Bintang Sutresno (1209624114) Among the many ways of achieving space cooling, the most prominent ones are either air conditioners or fans. Both air conditioners and fans are commonly used to cool indoor spaces, but differ significantly in their cooling mechanisms, energy consumption, and environmental impact. Air conditioners removes the excess heat within the room and transferring it to the outside air, creating a cooler and more comfortable environment for the indoor space. In contrast, fans do not change the temperature and just circulate air, which helps evaporate sweat and make the body feel cooler. As a result, fans are less effective in extremely hot weather. Another major difference lies in energy usage is air conditioners consume much more electricity than fans, costing more on the electricity bill. However, fans are more affordable to purchase and maintain. Additionally, fans are generally more environmentally friendly because they use less energy and emit fewer ...

University Students Under Pressure: The Consequences of Inflation

Image
By Giani Siti Azhara  (1209624109) Today, many people are struggling to manage their finances due to ongoing global inflation.  In Indonesia, this issue affects various sectors, including education. University students are  among those most impacted, especially those who live far from home. Managing daily  expenses such as transportation, food, and tuition is already challenging, and inflation makes  it even harder for them to stand on their feet while pursuing their studies. This issue can harm both their physical and mental health. For lower-income students, this  financial burden may lead to delayed education or dropping out, because they may choose to  work part-time while still attending university. Consequently, this situation widens the gap in  access to higher education. To address this, stronger government support and more flexible  options provided by universities are essential to help students continue their education despite t he ...
